Dr. Han Jo Kim, Attending Spine Surgeon and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery, specializes in surgical treatment of scoliosis and complex spine disorders. Dr. Kim completed his residency at HSS, where after he pursued specialized fellowships in adult and pediatric spinal deformity and scoliosis surgery, as well as cervical spine surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Kim has collaborated with leading spine surgeons globally, contributing to his extensive knowledge and refined surgical skills. He performs more than 85 complex deformity surgeries each year, leading HSS in surgical volume for complex spine cases.
Currently, as the Director of the Spine Fellowship, Dr. Kim stands at the forefront of spine research, leading multiple studies and earning accolades on both national and international fronts. Actively involved in education, he imparts his knowledge to residents, fellows, and physician assistants. Dr. Kim embraces a comprehensive patient care approach, exploring non-surgical alternatives collaboratively with various specialists before considering surgery.
Beyond his clinical and academic achievements, Dr. Kim has devoted his surgical expertise as a volunteer at the FOCOS hospital in Ghana, West Africa. There, he has successfully treated some of the most rare and complex spinal deformities in both pediatric and adult patients, a testament to his commitment to global healthcare.
An accomplished author, Dr. Kim has contributed to over 400 peer-reviewed scientific articles and more than 35 book chapters, co-authoring a textbook on cervical spine surgery. His leadership extends to the AO Spine Foundation, where he has authored surgical reference guides and participated in international fellowships and societies, such as the Scoliosis Research Society and Cervical Spine Research Society. In 2022, Dr. Kim was appointed to the David B. Levine MD Chair in Scoliosis, solidifying his role as a leading expert in the surgical treatment of scoliosis and complex spine disorders. He is at the forefront of innovative research, exploring robotically guided surgical techniques and strategies to enhance recovery times for complex spine surgery patients.
Passionate about knowledge sharing, Dr. Kim has played pivotal roles in various international meetings and societies, including serving as the Program Chair for the International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques (MAST), the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS), and the International Spinal Deformity Symposium (ISDS). A mentor and advocate for the next generation, Dr. Kim continues to be involved with FOCOS hospital, where he volunteers as a surgeon and serves on the Board. As the Director of the Spine Fellowship and Chair of the Fellowship Committee at HSS, he remains deeply committed to shaping the future of spine surgery and research.
