Dr. Lawrence G. Lenke is a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery (in Neurological Surgery) and Chief of Spinal
Deformity Surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also CoDirector of Och Spine, and Surgeon-in-Chief at the Och Spine Hospital at New York-Presbyterian/Allen
Hospital. He is one of the world's foremost leaders in Spinal Deformity Surgery. His world-renowned
practice is devoted exclusively to spinal deformity surgery with an emphasis on complex reconstructive
surgery in both children and adults. In the late 1990’s, he developed the classification system for
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), to which his name is attached, and is still the most widely
referenced Scoliosis classification system world-wide. After receiving his undergraduate degree Summa
Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame and his MD with AOA honors from Northwestern
University Medical School, Dr. Lenke completed his Internship, Residency and Pediatric & Adult Spine
Deformity Fellowship Surgery training in the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Washington UniversitySt. Louis Medical Center. He practiced at Washington University-St. Louis for 24 years before leaving for
his current position at Columbia University/Och Spine Hospital. He proudly served as president of the
Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) in 2010-2011, chaired a Task Force that led to the start of Spine
Deformity, the official Journal of the SRS and serves as one of the Deputy Editors. Dr. Lenke has been
listed in America's Top Doctors for the past 10 years and Best Doctors in America the past 15 years
consecutively. Dr. Lenke was honored with the North American Spine Society’s 2013 Leon Wiltse Award
for excellence in leadership and/or clinical research in spine care. As a reflection of his preeminent
surgical skills, he has hosted over 700 spinal surgeons from around the globe to observe his surgeries in
the past 25 years and has proudly trained over 115 spinal surgery fellows both from Orthopedic and
Neurosurgical residency programs. Dr. Lenke’s prolific academic career includes publishing over 675
peer-reviewed manuscripts, editing five textbooks on Spinal Surgery, chairing over 125 Spinal Surgery
meetings and having been an invited Visiting Professor domestically and internationally more than 100
times. His current H-Index is 123, which is the highest of any surgeon at Columbia University.
