Biography
Dr. Laurel Blakemore is the current President of the Scoliosis Research Society. Dr. Blakemore is a clinical professor of Orthopedics and Pediatrics at George Washington University and Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at the Inova Fairfax campus of the University of Virginia. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Creative Writing and Literature. She earned her medical degree at the University of Alabama before completing her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center and fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics at Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Blakemore was on faculty at Case Western Reserve and the University of Michigan where she was residency program director. She has served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC. and the University of Florida, where Dr. Blakemore was the Shriner’s Endowed Professor and Chief of Pediatric Orthopedics. In 2020 she joined Pediatric Specialists of Virginia as Chief Executive Officer and is charged with continuing the successful growth and development of this collaboration between Children’s National Health System and Inova Health System. In addition to her role as CEO of Pediatric Specialists of Virginia she remains clinically active, focusing on children with spinal conditions including scoliosis and kyphosis, early onset scoliosis, spinal tumors and trauma.
An invited visiting professor both nationally and internationally on multiple occasions, Dr. Blakemore has served on the board of directors for the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America and the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS). She serves as Chair of the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children Medical Advisory Board. She has published more than 70 peer reviewed articles and 15 book chapters, and serves as associate editor for Spine Deformity journal and reviewer for several other peer-reviewed journals.
