Professor of Neurosurgery
University of Wisconsin - Madison
I am a neurosurgeon specialized in nerves. I grew up in Cairo, Egypt and graduated from the faculty of Medicine at Cairo University. I completed Neurosurgery residency at the University of Rennes, in France, in 1999 and a Neurosurgery residency in the USA at Thomas Jefferson University hospital in Philadelphia in 2008. I further specialized in spine and nerves by completing a combined spine and nerve fellowship at Mayo Clinic, Rochester USA. In 2009 I joined the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I have developed a busy Nerve program in collaboration with plastic surgery. We have a multi-disciplinary brachial plexus clinic. I also treat nerve entrapments with special interestt in meralgia paresthetica and thoracic outlet syndrome. These have resulted in several technique innovations that have already been published. I am passionate about teaching locally and globally with several visiting professorships in and outside the USA. We have a CAST approved fellowship for Nerves, and will start training fellows in addition to training residents. I have an NIH-funded lab with focus on spinal cord injury (SCI) and nerve regeneration. We collaborate with Biomedical Engineering for sustained release of proteins to decrease inflammation and enhance axonal regeneration. I have > 85 peer-reviewed publications, my H-index is 22 as of January 2025. I also published a surgical guide book on the operative exposures of the nerves as well as a book on Nerve Cases, and a Neursurgery Primary Examination review. My book, 'Anatomy and Exposure of Spinal Nerves' is now translated to Chinese and Russian. The second edition, "Nerves: Anatomy, Exposure, and Techniques" will be published February 2025. I plan to continue research in Nerve regeneration and SCI in order to develop better understanding and better therapeutics to help people with paralyzed limbs.
