Antoinette Jasmine Charles is a first-generation Haitian-American who was born and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida. She is a fourth-year medical student at Duke University School of Medicine, holding a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience with a minor in chemistry from Georgia State University. After graduating, Antoinette worked as a clinical research fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health. Co-founding the Duke Spine Navigator's Program, she aims to improve patients' access to and utilization of existing healthcare resources, expand the social support network of patients, and increase mobility in the postoperative period. Antoinette recently graduated with a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health.
Antoinette serves in several leadership roles, such as Policy Lead for A Healthier Democracy, President of Future Leaders in Surgery, and President of the Duke Global Surgery Alliance. In 2022, she was invited to serve on the White House Clinician Innovators Roundtable Series, contributing her experiences with personal challenges, leadership opportunities, and clinical experiences to discussions on health policy and civic engagement impacting providers and patients.
As a future orthopedic surgeon, Antoinette will serve her patients by healing their musculoskeletal injuries in the operating room and advocating for policy changes that address social determinants of health and improve the quality of care in the legislative chamber. Through active participation in shaping health policies, she aims to contribute to creating a more inclusive and patient-centered healthcare system.
